The GSMA North America Networks Group (NANG) is pleased to share the latest version (v0.46) of its Exploring Private Networks through the Lens of MNOs whitepaper examining the rapidly expanding landscape of Private Cellular Networks and their role within the broader public mobile ecosystem. As cellular technology continues to distinguish itself through wide-area mobility, standardized interoperability, and robust service assurance frameworks, private networks are emerging as a compelling option for enterprises seeking secure, flexible, and high-performance connectivity solutions.

The document explores how private networks can operate—whether as standalone environments, virtualized instances on shared infrastructure, or fully/partially integrated extensions of public mobile networks delivered by operators and their partners. It examines a range of enterprise use cases through the lens of public mobile network stakeholders, outlines the relevant 3GPP enablers, and identifies potential gaps where further work is required.

In addition to providing an overview of industry developments and cross-referencing insights from key partners, this version sets the stage for potential future GSMA deliverables, including a Product Requirements Document (PRD) developed in collaboration with global GSMA working groups.

This whitepaper is intended for operators, industry partners, and standards contributors seeking insights on the current and future state of private cellular networks—and how they intersect with public infrastructure in an increasingly interconnected ecosystem.
