Programmes – Connected Living & Near Field Communications (NFC)

The GSMA will be showcasing two of their Tier 1 projects Connected Living & Mobile NFC Services Programme with interactive demonstrations of current solutions and services.

Connected Living is a three year market development initiative whose mission is to help mobile operators accelerate the delivery of new connected devices and services. Our target is to assist in the creation of 700 million new mobile connections, whilst stimulating a number of service trials and launches in the Automotive, Education and Healthcare sectors. The Connected Living programme is also working with the city of Barcelona, the Mobile World Capital, to develop and showcase smart city services . Our vision is to enable everyone to ‘experience a world where everything intelligently connects’.

Near Field Communications, or NFC, is a contactless radio technology that enables devices within a few centimetres of each other to exchange information and data quickly and easily. NFC chips are now being embedded into SIM cards in mobile phones supporting an array of new digital services. Handsets equipped with SIM-based NFC enable people to interact quickly and efficiently with the world around them, simply by tapping their device against a reader, enabling everyday processes to become simpler, such as making payments at point of sale or validating tickets. The widespread usage of mobile NFC services will lead to significant benefits for consumers, governments, transportation authorities, retailers, banks, mobile operators and other stakeholders. Many of the world’s leading mobile network operators have now committed to launch commercial mobile NFC services. The commitment to SIM-based NFC services will help drive global interoperability, portability and ensure bank-grade security for users worldwide. This approach will also help to grow the scale of services within the wider ecosystem, in turn providing a service that is quick, simple to use and secure for users all over the world.

To help drive the uptake of these services, the GSMA is supporting and promoting the adoption mobile NFC and in particular, the GSMA is focused on driving the standardised deployment of mobile NFC using the SIM as the secure element to provide authentication, security and portability across many different handsets. Adopting SIM-based NFC as a global standard will also ensure economies of scale and interoperability, which will be critical to the widespread adoption of NFC, enabling people around the world to benefit from NFC services, regardless of their operator network or device type.
