The GSMA to chair workshop on Connected and Automated Driving at the Digital Assembly

Co-organised by the European Commission and the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Digital Assembly 2016 will be attended by high-level officials from EU Member States and European institutions, policymakers, representatives of industry and academia, start-ups and NGOs. The programme of the event is designed to enable discussion and the exchange of ideas between stakeholders on European digital policy. It will feature a plenary session with keynote speeches by European Commission Vice-President Andrus Ansip and Commissioner Gunther Oettinger on the digital priorities of the EU. Several other institutional leaders and MEPs will participate in the various workshops.

The GSMA’s Afke Schaart will chair and moderate the workshop on Connected and Automated Driving: a catalyst for the future deployment of 5G in Europe. It will explore how advanced connectivity infrastructure, such as 5G networks, will enable connected automated driving and accelerate the digitisation of several vertical industries, while considering the longer-term implications for policy.

The first panel will analyse connected automated driving as a promising example of a new “digital ecosystem”. Participants will discuss how advanced digital technologies and services, supported by multi-sectorial cooperation, will accelerate the deployment of connected and automated driving.

The second panel will focus on connectivity, the longer-term policy perspective on 5G deployment and its impact on several vertical industries, and the competitiveness of the EU economy. The conference updates can be followed on Twitter via the #da16eu hashtag while the workshop on Connected and Automated Driving can be followed under #DA16cars. The event will be streamed live on the European Commission’s website and on the Slovak Presidency website.
