The GSMA welcomes the launch of European Commission’s public consultation on the Telecoms Regulatory Review

The GSMA has applauded the Commission’s launch of a public consultation on the Telecoms Regulatory Reform as there is a real need to modernise regulation to address the changed realities in the market and to boost investment, and innovation in Europe. In the coming months, the GSMA will closely engage with the European Commission to respond to the main questions raised in the consultation. The GSMA issued a press statement underlining the importance of robust reform and the need for a new regulatory framework that enhances the region’s ability to be a hub for investment and innovation, as well as protecting European citizens as consumers of communications services. Other elements highlighted in the statement are:

  •  The importance of boosting the Internet of things;
  • The need to create a level playing field to ensure that similar services, including those from non-traditional sources, adhere to the same rules;
  • The need for a principles-based approach, focusing, in particular, on removing unnecessary regulatory burdens and making regulation future proof;
  • The need to deploy new and harmonised spectrum for mobile broadband across Europe.
