The Network and information Security Directive

On 7 February 2013, the European Commission published its proposal for a Directive on Network and Information Security (NIS). The main aim of the Directive is to strengthen reporting requirements and ensure a high common level of network and information security across the EU.

As the EU’s telecom operators already abide by similar reporting requirements under the Regulatory Framework for Electronic Communications, the GSMA has emphasised the importance of excluding the telecoms sector from the scope of this Directive to prevent duplication.

In addition, the GSMA has – through position papers, press statements and proposed amendments to the co-legislators – underlined the importance of covering all actors in the value chain, including hardware and software vendors, within the scope of this Directive.

As this dossier is one of the Greek Presidency’s priorities, a final agreement is expected to be reached by the end of June 2014.
