Meet the robot that connects isolated young people in the Nordics

For children with long-term illnesses, it can be difficult to attend school, take part in activities and keep up with friends. Telia Company has partnered with Norwegian startup No Isolation to use robotic technology to help housebound children stay connected and feel less isolated.

The partnership provides AV1 robots that act as substitutes for the children – attending school or watching sporting events on their behalf, for example. Each robot is operated by the child from an app on their mobile device, giving them the opportunity to continue with their daily life through the robot’s eyes, ears and voice.

Telia Company raises money for the robots through its mobile phone recycling scheme and also supports employee volunteers who deliver the robots to schools and train teachers how to use them. Emil, who lives in Larvik, can no longer go to school because of his ME. Thanks to mobile connectivity and the AV1 robot, he can participate in lessons remotely and stay in touch with his friends.
