Solarisation at Reliance Jio

Reliance Jio, in alignment with its commitment to sustainable practices and green energy initiatives, has undertaken various projects to harness renewable energy sources, significantly reducing carbon emissions across its network infrastructure.

Distributed Solar Installation

One of the noteworthy initiatives involves the widespread implementation of Photo Voltaic (PV) systems at Reliance Jio owned tower sites. Between April 2023 and December 2023, they successfully installed PV systems at 20,340 tower sites, cumulatively generating 119,020 MWh of green energy. This installation was strategically carried out in areas with shadow-free land availability, ensuring feasibility. The positive impact of this distributed approach is evident in the remarkable reduction of 84,504 tCO2e, underlining Reliance Jio’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Centralised Solar Installation

In addition to the distributed approach, Reliance Jio has established a centralised 35MW captive Solar Plant in Bidar, Karnataka. This centralised facility contributes significantly to powering large and medium facilities within Karnataka. The annual carbon emissions savings from this centralised solar plant amount to an impressive 39,184 tCO2e. This centralised model not only consolidates energy production but also ensures efficient utilisation within specific regions, optimising the environmental benefits.

Wheeling of Renewable Energy from Third Parties

Expanding its green energy portfolio, Reliance Jio adopts a forward-looking strategy by engaging in power wheeling from third-party RE sources. For nine major facilities across India, Reliance Jio has successfully utilised power wheeled from these external RE sources. The fiscal year 2022-2023 saw the wheeling of a total of 26,846 MWh of RE power, resulting in a substantial reduction of 19,061 tCO2e. This approach not only diversifies the renewable energy mix but also showcases Reliance Jio’s commitment to adopting innovative solutions for sustainable operations on a pan-India scale.
