Turkcell’s Greensite Project

Problem

Faced with the urgent global challenge of climate change, Turkcell initiated a transformative journey to make its business model environmentally sustainable, aiming to leverage technology for eco-friendly, efficient, and sustainable operations.

Solution

Turkcell implemented technology-driven initiatives. Notably, in 2022 Turkcell’s wind and solar energy projects resulted in a 65 GWh energy saving. In 2023, the focus shifted to monitoring grid efficiency, targeting a 5% improvement by the end of 2024. The “Greensite” project integrated solar energy into approximately 650 base stations in 2022, this number increased to 1100 installations by 3Q 2023 with the aim of reaching 1400 installations by Q4 2023.

The project aims to have an additional 100 greensite installations operational in 2024.  This will take the total to 2400 Greensite operational installations. The anticipated savings in 2024 totals 491.4 million TL including wind and solar energy power plant activations.

Impact

Turkcell’s proactive measures have borne fruit, with a substantial 65 GWh energy saving by end-2022. The Greensite project’s success showcases Turkcell’s commitment to sustainability. Emphasis on grid efficiency aligns with eco-conscious practices. Anticipated savings of approximately 491.4 million TL by end-2024, coupled with a 2030 goal to source 100% of electricity consumption from renewables, Turkcell’s endeavours signify a decisive shift toward a more sustainable and responsible business paradigm.
