Buraq is a Pakistan-based technology company that specialises in flood early warnings and weather monitoring. Combining expertise in environmental data, automation and IT, Buraq delivers reliable, real-time systems that help governments and communities prepare for disasters. The GSMA supported Buraq and the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat Pakistan (AKAHP) to improve climate preparedness in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral regions.

A mountainous village with tan houses sits beside a river. An infographic details the GSMA Innovation Fund project (Oct 2023–Jan 2025): 2,200+ people impacted, 570 alerts sent, 12 IoT weather stations upgraded, and 10 AWS/EWS community workshops held.

The project upgraded weather stations, piloted an Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled landslide warning system and launched the ‘Salamat Raho’ platform to deliver timely, localised alerts via mobile SMS, interactive voice response (IVR) and sirens. Combining traditional knowledge with modern technology, the system enables communities and agencies to act early and build resilience against floods, landslides and avalanches.

Buraq is an organisation supported by the GSMA Innovation Fund for Anticipatory Humanitarian Action, launched in 2022, which backed solutions that leverage mobile digital technology to help anticipate potential humanitarian impacts and enable effective early response. This initiative was funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and was supported by the GSMA and its members.
