The State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money 2025 (SOTIR) offered rich insights derived from industry data. Alongside SOTIR, the GSMA Mobile Money Programme published two reports at MWC Kigali 2025 that take a closer look at key industry trends: The SOTIR Global Deep Dive and regional cuts.
The SOTIR Global Deep Dive looks at worldwide mobile money trends that supported the industry’s growth past two billion registered accounts in 2024. The SOTIR regional cuts report looks at specific progress drivers by region. This year, the focus regions are Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), East Africa and Asia.
The SOTIR regional cuts highlight that in 2024, most registered accounts in Sub-Saharan Africa were in West Africa, closely followed by East Africa. However, East Africa had the highest proportion of monthly active accounts among Sub-Saharan African subregions. Outside of SSA, South Asia had the highest number of registered and monthly active accounts of any region globally. In East Asia and the Pacific, transaction values grew faster than in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2024.
