Internet Fundamentals
Child Online Safety
Children and young people are increasingly using the internet and mobile phones to learn, communicate and be entertained. While being online brings many benefits, it also comes with risks. This module supports parents and carers to understand those risks and feel confident helping children use the internet safely and responsibly.
By the end of this module, your trainees will:
- Understand the benefits of the internet for children and young people, and the role it plays in their everyday lives.
- Recognise the main online risks children may face, including cyberbullying, scams, inappropriate content and online grooming.
- Understand key concepts such as privacy, digital footprint and data protection, and why they matter for children’s safety.
- Be aware of common security threats such as phishing, scams, spyware and malware, and how children can avoid them.
- Understand wider online wellbeing issues, including screen time, peer pressure, social comparison, and false or misleading information.
- Feel confident having open, age-appropriate conversations with children about the online world and potential risks.
- Know how to use free safety tools, parental controls and privacy settings in apps and websites to help keep children safer online.
