Earlier this month, FICO World 2025 brought together leaders in fraud prevention and financial innovation in Florida, and GSMA was proud to be part of the conversation. Brian Gorman, Technical Director – Fintech and Commerce Lead at GSMA, made his debut at the event, joining forces with Dan Standish, Ally Mafunzwaini, and Scott Taylor for a compelling panel discussion on the evolving landscape of scams.

Tackling Scams with Mobile Network Data

The panel focused on how organisations such as FICO, Santander, Absa Group, and JT Group Limited are leveraging mobile network signals to develop powerful, real-time fraud detection strategies. These insights are driving forward-thinking initiatives that aim to safeguard customers from increasingly sophisticated scam tactics.

One of the standout solutions discussed was Scam Signal, a UK-based initiative showing excellent results in identifying fraudulent activity. Built through collaboration between the banking and telecommunications sectors—led by UK Finance and GSMA—this API- has significantly improved scam detection while delivering groundbreaking false positive rates, ensuring a smoother customer experience.

Innovating with GSMA Open Gateway APIs

The session also highlighted cutting-edge APIs available through GSMA’s Open Gateway framework, such as SIM Swap, Call Forward and indeed Scam Signal. These technologies enable cross-industry fraud defences by integrating mobile intelligence into banking security systems. It’s a clear signal of how telecoms and finance are joining forces for smarter fraud prevention.

Collaborating Across Ecosystems

Beyond the stage, it was a fantastic opportunity to engage with GSMA members and partners working across a wide spectrum of solutions—from RCS and branded caller ID services to AI-driven identity verification tools. The event welcomed contributions and insights from big industry players:

AuthenticID, Vonage, Tech Mahindra, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Hiya Inc., Prove,

Looking Ahead

The event was a powerful reminder of how data, AI, and collaboration can transform fraud detection across industries and across continents.
