Colombian operators join GSMA Open Gateway with two digital solutions to combat online fraud

Claro, Movistar and Tigo launch user identity verification tools to simplify the development of more secure mobile applications.

3 February 2026, Bogota: Colombia joins GSMA Open Gateway, the global initiative that brings together the mobile industry to accelerate the creation of digital applications and services. At an event convened by the GSMA, the association leading the project, the corporate business divisions of Claro, Movistar and Tigo presented their first two solutions developed under the initiative: SIM Swap and Number Verification.

GSMA Open Gateway is a standard through which mobile operators provide developers access to a range of network functions used to create applications and services. By bringing together operators from around the world, the initiative facilitates the design of digital products that can function seamlessly across all devices, regardless of country or operator. This is achieved through unique access points, known as Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), which serve as gateways to information about network capabilities. These APIs are available through the CAMARA repository, an open-source project led by GSMA and the Linux Foundation.

In line with the global trend, the first two APIs developed in Colombia focus on digital security. The SIM Swap API makes it possible to detect recent changes to the SIM card associated with a mobile number, while Number Verification confirms that a phone number is effectively linked to the device from which the connection is made. By revealing key information in real time, without the need for additional steps such as SMS, these APIs help detect and prevent fraud in financial transactions. As a result, banks, fintechs and insurance companies are among the first potential customers for this new line of business for telecom operators.

For Claro, supporting the digital transformation of businesses in the country is fundamental. The GSMA Open Gateway initiative drives innovation on solid foundations and simplifies processes in a unified way for our customers,” said María Luisa Escolar, Executive Director of the Corporate Market Unit, Claro.

GSMA Open Gateway marks a milestone for innovation in Colombia. By opening advanced network capabilities through standardized APIs, it enables companies to integrate functions such as identity verification and real-time fraud prevention, strengthening digital security. For Movistar Empresas, it is a key platform to accelerate digital transformation and create new opportunities with sectors such as banking, commerce and fintech,” said Danghelly Rodríguez, B2B Marketing Director, Telefónica Movistar Colombia

This is a turning point for Colombia: when the industry aligns with global standards, innovation stops being fragmented and becomes scalable. At Tigo Business, we put network capabilities in the hands of enterprises and developers to simplify integrations and strengthen their verification and fraud prevention processes, accelerating the digital economy on an increasingly robust foundation,” said Paulo Alejandro Franco Agudelo, Director of B2B Product Management, Tigo.

APIs have been around in our industry for years, but in a fragmented way. The innovative factor of GSMA Open Gateway is bringing the industry together to offer APIs in a standardized, global manner. That scale enables developers to accelerate the creation and commercialization of applications across multiple markets, while delivering more secure, seamless and simple user experiences,” emphasized Alejandro Adamowicz, Director of Technology and Strategic Engagement for Latin America, GSMA.

Since its launch at MWC Barcelona 2023, more than 80 operator groups, representing over 80% of mobile connections worldwide, have already joined GSMA Open Gateway, alongside the world’s leading technology companies. In Latin America, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay and Peru have already introduced their first APIs.
