Intelligent Digital Transformation in the 5G Era

Following the launch of commercial 5G networks in 2019/2020 by pioneering countries, commercial deployments have gained momentum with more countries around the world jumping on the commercial 5G bandwagon in the last 24 months. The rollout and adoption of 5G has been faster than those of previous network generations. At the end of March 2023, 228 operators had launched 5G mobile services across 87 countries worldwide. Some 30 new countries will be launching 5G services by the end of the year; many of these will be developing markets across Africa and Asia, making 5G a truly global trend. Globally, 5G adoption will scale from 1 billion mobile connections in 2022 to 1.5 billion in 2023, which is significant progress. Without question, 5G is now mainstream and it is playing a key role in driving and accelerating digital transformation across sectors, societies and economies.

Malaysia began its 5G journey in early March 2021 by establishing the Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) to drive the development of the 5G infrastructure in Malaysia, offering 5G as a wholesale network service to other telecommunications companies. The first rollout of commercial 5G services in Malaysia was on 15th of December 2021, with YTL and TM as its operators upon rollout. By October 2022, other Malaysian MNOs such as Celecom and Digi (now CelcomDigi following a merger in December 2022) had taken up shares in DNB. The recent announcement by the Malaysian government to allow a second 5G wholesale network in 2024 will hopefully play an important role in enhancing competition and accelerating the digital transformation of consumer, enterprise and public sectors across the wider economy in Malaysia.

The GSMA with the support of MDEC and Ministry of Digital in Malaysia is holding the Digital Transformation Leaders’ CxO Summit at the JW Marriott Hotel in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia on 22nd and 23rd of November 2023. Working together to advance the mobile industry and the surrounding digital ecosystem, the GSMA Digital Transformation Acceleration Forum (DXAF) is inviting DX and 5G industry/ecosystem leaders for a focused discussion on opportunities and challenges related to commercial strategies, technological developments and industry promotion policies to accelerate sector wide intelligent digital transformation in the 5G era.
