GSMA 5G Emerging Economies Community (5G EEC) is an exclusive community of like-minded operators, technology partners and application service providers in emerging markets who are determined to embark on 5G journey in a cost-effective manner with relevant country/region-specific use cases with an overall aim to address common challenges in light of common variables thus accelerating 5G ecosystem.

GSMA 5G Emerging Economies Community (5G EEC) officially launched on the 4th of June 2020 and hosted its first virtual roundtable with 4 member countries and respective operators to discuss the business, policy and technology readiness for member operators and develop a value-oriented 5G approach with an eye on maximizing current 4G investment and develop a four-step approach model with an aim to lay a strong foundation for 5G.

  • Technology approach: Pushing LTE performance to gigabit speeds and fixing coverage and capacity issues since LTE will be essential both as a stepping stone to 5G and also as fall back technology in case of 5G to avoid user experience shocks
  • Network approach: Network Virtualization to achieve flexible, highly scalable, cost-efficient, and energy-saving networks.
  • Business approach: New Business Models to support a multiplicity of use cases in 5G owing to eMBB, URLLC, and Massive IoT capabilities.
  • Policy and spectrum approach: Enable pro-investment and pro innovation-led policy & spectrum framework which will help address common concerns like Taxation, ROW, fiberization, sufficient and harmonized spectrum, use of E band for backhaul, etc.

Members also got the opportunity to look at Korea’s 5G journey and got key insights in terms of lessons learned, challenges, use cases, and key building blocks such as level of digitization needed before embarking on 5G.

The key operators presented were Bharti Airtel Ltd, Dialog Axiata Plc., GrameenPhone Ltd, Robi Axiata Ltd., Telenor Pakistan, PMCL(Jazz) and PTML(Ufone) beside Telenor and Axiata at a group level.

The next event will be centered around the technology approach specifically focusing on Open RAN & network virtualization.
