GSMA Mobile World Congress Kicks Off Today

Leading European Policymakers and Industry Experts Gather  at Ministerial Programme to Shape Future of Telecoms

26 February 2018, Barcelona: Today marks the beginning of the 2018 edition of the GSMA Mobile World Congress. Under the theme “Creating a Better Future”, this year’s Mobile World Congress, which is expected to gather more than 108,000 attendees overall, will explore the trends that will shape the mobile industry in the years ahead, both in Europe and around the globe.

The Ministerial Programme – a unique forum where CEOs and policymakers discuss the challenges and opportunities for the mobile sector – is set to attract the largest number of delegates ever. Prominent participants include European Commission Vice-President for the Digital Single Market, Andrus Ansip and European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, Mariya Gabriel, numerous representatives from the European Commission Directorate-Generals for Competition (DG COMP) and for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG Connect) and Members of the European Parliament.

“The transition to 5G has the potential to redefine the competitive position of the EU globally and transform social and economic activity across the Continent, but Europe’s leadership in the 5G era will strongly depend on reforming telecoms regulation to foster investment and innovation,” said Afke Schaart, GSMA Vice President and Head of Europe. “By exploring topics such as 5G, spectrum, the Electronic Communication Code, the Internet of Things and ePrivacy among others and their expected impact on society and the telecoms industry as a whole, the Ministerial Programme at Mobile World Congress establishes itself as the industry’s “must-attend” event, where policymakers and industry come together to shape the future of the telecom industry in Europe.”
