AI for Networks: Creating Intelligent AI Networks for Tomorrow

The GSMA is spearheading the integration of Artificial Intelligence into the fabric of mobile networks, laying the foundations for truly intelligent AI networks. This represents a paradigm shift from traditional network management to a new era of automation, efficiency, and operational excellence. Our ‘AI for Networks’ workstream is the focal point for this industry-wide transformation.

The strategic imperative for AI-driven operations

Exceeding human-scale management

The complexity of modern mobile networks, driven by 5G, network densification, and diverse service demands, is rapidly outpacing the capabilities of traditional, manual management. A reactive approach to optimisation and fault resolution is no longer sufficient to guarantee the performance and reliability our connected world requires.

A new paradigm of intelligence

By embedding AI and ML at the core of network operations, the industry can unlock new levels of value. The ‘AI for Networks’ initiative guides this transition, moving the ecosystem from reactive problem-solving to proactive, predictive, and increasingly autonomous operations that define the next generation of AI networks.

Our key focus areas

Our collaborative work is concentrated on three critical domains that are essential to building scalable, resilient AI networks for the mobile industry.

Network lifecycle automation

The opportunity

The ultimate goal is to create ‘zero-touch’ networks that can manage themselves throughout their entire lifecycle. This involves leveraging AI for everything from network planning and deployment to continuous optimisation, fault finding and decommissioning. Technologies like intent-based networking are central to this vision, allowing operators to define business outcomes and have the network intelligently configure itself to achieve them.

The GSMA’s role

We facilitate the creation of common frameworks and models needed for end-to-end automation, ensuring interoperability between different vendor solutions and operational domains.

Intelligent resource management

The opportunity

AI can transform how network resources are managed across the Radio Access Network (RAN), Core, and Transport layers. By using predictive analytics, networks can anticipate traffic patterns and user demand, dynamically allocating resources where they are needed most. This not only improves Quality of Service but is also critical for enhancing network energy efficiency, a key industry priority.

The GSMA’s role

Our community brings together experts to define best practices for AI-driven resource management and to develop standardised data models that enable more effective predictive algorithms.

Enhanced security and resilience

The opportunity

In an increasingly complex threat landscape, AI provides a powerful new set of tools for network defence. AI-powered systems can perform real-time anomaly detection to identify and neutralise threats faster than human operators. Furthermore, predictive maintenance algorithms can anticipate potential equipment failures before they occur, dramatically improving network resilience and uptime.

The GSMA’s role

We foster collaboration on threat intelligence sharing and promote the development of standardised approaches for AI-based security, ensuring a secure and trustworthy network for all.
