eSIM is a global specification by the GSMA which enables remote SIM provisioning of any mobile device. eSIM now allows consumers to store multiple operator profiles on a device simultaneously, and switch between them remotely, though only one can be used at a time.
A GSMA Intelligence report titled “The future of eSIM in smartphones” released in March 2020 highlights the fact that momentum for eSIM in smartphones is accelerating – at least from an industry perspective. Apple, Samsung and Huawei, the three largest OEMs in the world by smartphone unit sales, have introduced eSIM in their flagship smartphone models, while over 120 mobile service providers offer eSIM services to their customers, spanning more than 50 countries across all regions but Africa.
GSMA Intelligence also estimates that eSIM would constitute 25-45% of all smartphone connections globally by 2025 depending on the decisions taken by Operators, Governments, Vendors and Consumers over the next period.
The GSMA MENA team would like to invite you to join a 75 min forum on 22nd June, at 10:00 GMT, titled Accelerating eSIM Adoption in MENA, to hear from representatives of industry leaders about recent developments in eSIM technology and markets, globally and regionally and discuss potential role for GSMA in MENA to support industry efforts.
