Announcing The GSMA Innovation Fund for Climate Resilience and Adaptation Cohort 2.0

[This blog was last updated on 25 March 2024 since its first published date of Monday 26 February, 2024 to include Câm Dairy in the list of our full cohort of start-ups selected under the Innovation Fund for Climate Resilience and Adaptation 2.0.]

In the face of mounting climate challenges, the call for innovative solutions reverberates louder than ever. From empowering communities to strengthening sustainable practices, the transformative potential of mobile and digital technologies holds the key to navigating uncharted territories in our collective fight against climate change.

With this objective in mind, the GSMA Innovation Fund for Climate Resilience and Adaptation 2.0 was launched during the GSMA’s MWC Barcelona event in February 2023. The fund is designed to help accelerate the testing, adoption and scalability of digital innovations that enable the world’s most vulnerable populations to adapt to, anticipate and absorb the negative impacts of climate change, or strengthen biodiversity. It builds on the previous GSMA Innovation Fund for Climate Resilience and Adaptation, currently supporting 11 start-ups.

This funding round received 593 applications from 83 countries, predominantly from Africa and Asia.

We’ve summarised some of the trends found from the applications in our blog here.

A year later, as part of MWC Barcelona 2024, we are delighted to announce our new cohort of start-ups:

Aloi | Nepal | Supporting dairy farmers to adopt climate smart agro-forestry practices, while strengthening financial inclusion through a cashless financing digital platform.

BizyTech | Tanzania | Advancing sustainable agriculture with personalised practices for smallholder farmers, enhancing soil quality, yields, and incomes through AI-powered satellite imagery.

Câm Dairy | Nigeria | Câm Dairy is tackling food loss in Nigeria’s #dairy industry by providing market access, an efficient distribution system and asset financing.

Crop2X | Pakistan | Providing farmers with real-time data and actionable insights to optimise agricultural productivity with artificial intelligence.

Farm To Feed | Kenya | Tackling food loss and waste to improve affordability and boost farmer incomes through a mobile app.

Over the course of the grant, we will support these start-ups to strengthen climate resilience efforts through:

  • Facilitating partnerships with mobile operators and public sector organisations;
  • Providing technical assistance on how to reach and better serve climate vulnerable communities through digital innovations;
  • Providing tools, templates and specialist advisory support on how to evidence socio-economic and climate impact, as well as promote product improvement;
  • Supporting with scalability and sustainability planning; and
  • Offering opportunities to increase their visibility to potential investors and partners through profiling their innovative work in GSMA events and publications.

By catalysing these digital solutions, our aim is to generate valuable insights from innovative use-cases, partnerships, and business models, thereby enhancing the sustainability and scalability of digital climate resilience solutions.

In this pursuit, the GSMA is committed to empowering this cohort of innovators, enabling them to unlock their full potential and make a meaningful impact on the lives of those vulnerable to climate risks.
