The Security Summit was successfully held on September 27th, 2023, at MWC23 Las Vegas. Inspiring speakers gathered and shared the major challenges of providing a safe, trustworthy, and secure 5G experience for consumers and companies. The two-part conference featured operator and vendor views on handset security, private 5G trust environment, and how it helps deliver agile cybersecurity. Part 1 – Communications and Connected Devices – Cyber Security Challenges and Opportunities

Hear from Google, Global DEKRA Cybersecurity Hub, National Emergency Number Association (The 9-1-1 Association), Levi’s Stadium Operations, Consumer Technology Association, and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) discussed the current cybersecurity landscape in light of the developments of futuristic technologies such as AI and 5G, as well as how better texting experiences can improve public safety and the importance of building a stronger connected device ecosystem through harmonized standards and regulations.

Steve Kelly

Chief Trust Officer, Institute for Security + Technology

As Chief Trust Officer, Steve Kelly establishes IST’s efforts to advance the trust, safety, and security of artificial intelligence and helps lead other aspects of the organization’s work. Steve comes to IST after serving on the National Security Council (NSC) staff as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Cybersecurity and Emerging Technology and retiring from the FBI as a supervisory special agent. In his White House role, Steve led national policymaking and advised NSC leadership and the President on matters involving cyber defense, critical infrastructure security and resilience, cyber incident management, and relevant emerging technologies. He served as chair of the U.S. government’s cyber response group, vulnerabilities equities process, the cyber interagency policy committee, and facilitated the successful launch of the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark security labeling program for consumer technology. He previously served on the NSC staff in 2013-2015, during which time he was instrumental in developing Presidential Policy Directive (PPD) 41 on United States Cyber Incident Coordination. Steve joined the FBI as a special agent soon after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and served within the Bureau’s cyber program for nearly 22 years in various field and headquarters roles. These included cybercrime and cyber/counterintelligence investigations, private sector and international engagement, strategy/policy, and leadership. His last FBI role was as Chief of Cyber Policy. While in government service, Steve contributed to numerous reports, plans, and policies—many non-public—which include: U.S. National Cybersecurity Strategy (2023); U.S. Government Cyber Deterrence Playbook (2021); World Economic Forum’s Partnership Against Cybercrime report (2020); Report of the Cyberspace Solarium Commission (2020); Report of the Attorney General’s Cyber-Digital Task Force (2018); U.S. National Cyber Strategy (2017); PPD-41 on United States Cyber Incident Coordination (2016); U.S. Cyber Incident Severity Schema (2015); and the NSTAC’s Report to the President on Information and Communications Technology Mobilization (2014). Prior to his government service, Steve practiced as a registered professional engineer.

Amy Chang

Resident Senior Fellow, Cybersecurity and Emerging Threats, R Street Institute

Amy Chang is a resident senior fellow for Cybersecurity and Emerging Threats at R Street Institute.

Prior to R Street, Amy was an Executive Director for Global Cybersecurity Operations at JPMorgan Chase, where she worked to protect the firm and the financial sector against cyber attacks. She liaised with peer financial institutions, the intelligence community, and government agencies to devise solutions to cyber threat information sharing. She helped develop and implement an intelligence-driven framework for approaching JPMorgan’s cybersecurity defense.

Amy was also formerly the Staff Director of the Asia and the Pacific Subcommittee at the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, where she was responsible for federal oversight and legislation on political, security, and economic issues in the greater Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

She has appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times, POLITICO and NPR, among others.

She is a graduate of Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government and Brown University. Amy was also an Intelligence Officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

Alex Leadbeater

Technical Security Director, GSMA

Alex is Technical Security Director at GSMA. Alex has spent over 25 years working across the Communications and Cyber Security industry. Alex specialises in bridging the gaps between communications technology evolution and regulatory requirements (Security, Privacy, Public Safety) placed on the Communications Service Providers.

Alex has been involved in standardisation for 20+ years and currently chairs several industry Cyber Security and Regulatory standards groups. Starting his career in satellite communications, following a Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering from Warwick University. Prior to joining GSMA in Jan 2023, Alex held a range of technical, design and regulatory governance roles for BT Plc.

Anders Olof Möller, PhD

Senior Security Specialist and Manager for R&D, Global DEKRA Cybersecurity Hub

Anders Olof Möller, PhD, is a senior security specialist and manager for R&D within the Global DEKRA Cybersecurity Hub (Málaga, Spain). He has ten years of experience as a security specialist and manager in the Swedish Armed Forces and Swedish National Communication Security Authority. He has a broad expertise in many security topics, especially security evaluation of communication systems and of integrated circuits, side-channel analysis, fault-injection attacks and cryptography. He received a master´s degree in applied physics and electrical engineering from Linköping University, Sweden, during which he spent one year at the Technische Universität München, Germany and one at ETSIT Polytechnical University of Madrid, Spain. He completed his master thesis with honors and received the best student award. After graduating, he continued at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, with a PhD in applied mathematics, specializing in optimization and systems theory with applications in telecommunications.

Brandon Abley

Director of Technology, National Emergency Number Association (The 9-1-1 Association)

Brandon Abley is Director of Technology for NENA: The 9-1-1 Association. In this capacity he works with a community of experts in the development of NENA technical standards and advises, educates and advocates on technical issues for the emergency calling community. He represents the United States, public safety and 9-1-1 with a variety of standards development and advocacy bodies, including ATIS, ETSI, IETF and EENA. Prior to working with NENA, Mr. Abley worked in the public safety communications field as a technology consultant, served as a senior public safety communications official for the state of Minnesota and was a telecommunications specialist for the US National Park Service.

Francine Melendez Hughes

Executive Vice President and General Manager, Levi’s Stadium Operations

Francine Melendez Hughes is in her first season as executive vice president & general manager of Levi’s Stadium. In her role, she is responsible for all aspects of stadium operations at the world-class venue located in Santa Clara, CA. This includes oversight of stadium operations, project management, engineering, grounds, guest services, janitorial, parking, security, transportation, and more. She is the stadium’s main point of contact on all event days.

Prior to joining the 49ers, Hughes served as vice president of real estate and facilities management for Curative, an innovative healthcare services company. There she was responsible for evaluating real estate strategy and securing real estate in response to the organization’s rapid growth, among other operations. She played a crucial role in the acquisition of a prime real estate asset and orchestrated its transformation from traditional office space into a health and wellness facility. Hughes’ tenure at Curative resulted in the company optimizing
operations and achieving significant efficiencies and cost savings.
Hughes also spent time with McCourt LLC (2013-2021) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (2009-2013) overseeing operations. At the Dodgers, she managed the 330-acre Dodger Stadium, gameday employees and multiple third-party services supporting event operations. Hughes was instrumental in spearheading sustainability initiatives spanning energy, water, and recycling. Additionally, she was responsible for overseeing the operational aspects of the team’s spring training facility and Dominican academy. Under her leadership, she successfully orchestrated the repositioning of the academy, implementing significant upgrades and enhancements. During her tenure with McCourt she supported event operations for the LA Marathon, and was charged with management of a world class equestrian operation. Alongside managing the equestrian operation, she routinely conducted risk assessments to ensure the highest operational and safety standards.

Hughes chose to join the 49ers and Levi’s Stadium due to her longstanding passion for sports. She loves the thrill of live entertainment and camaraderie that comes with working in sports. Outside of work, Hughes enjoys supporting her local community by organizing events and volunteering.

Hughes holds a B.S. in Management from the Graziadio business school at Pepperdine University. Originally from New York City, she splits her time between the Bay Area and Southern California where she resides with her mother, husband, son, daughter and grandson.

Phil Carter

RCS Messaging & Ecosystem Partnerships, Google

Phil has worked in the telecommunications industry for more than 25 years. Since joining Google in 2016, he has played a key role in developing the strategy for RCS growth, partner advocacy, and Messages adoption, which has resulted in the creation of an ecosystem of nearly 1 billion users worldwide today. He is now the vice chair of the GSMA’s Global Specification Group, where he focuses on modernizing the RCS specifications to enable privacy, innovation, and simplified interoperability.

Eugene Liderman

Director, Mobile Security Strategy , Google

Eugene Liderman currently serves as the Director of Mobile Security Strategy at Google. In this role, he leads efforts around Android security evangelism, security and privacy standards development, certifications, and other strategic programs. Eugene has over 20 years of experience in the information technology field – with a deep background across mobile security and identity across both enterprise and consumer applications. Before Google, Eugene served as the Director of Product Management at VMWare and Good Technology respectively. Eugene has worked on leading mobile security product offerings throughout his career.

Mike Bergman

Vice President of Technology and Standards, Consumer Technology Association

Mike leads association work on cybersecurity at CTA including the private sector effort towards a U.S. cybersecurity trust mark. He has been in the electronics industry for more than 30 years, in memory chip design, wireless communications and digital multimedia. He has two patents in semiconductor design and has contributed to various industry standards. He is a member of the FCC’s CSRIC VIII and Commerce’s IoT Advisory Board.

Paul Watrobski

IT Security Specialist, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

Paul Watrobski is an IT Security Specialist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) where he helped develop the “Profile of the IoT Core Baseline for Consumer IoT Products” among other guidance. Paul is a principal investigator for the “Trusted IoT Device Network-Layer Onboarding and Lifecycle Management” and “Software Supply Chain and DevOps Security Practices” projects at NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE), and he previously worked on a project around device intent.

Bob Lyle

Chief Revenue Officer, Cybeats

For nearly 30 years, Bob has led high-performing sales teams and fast-growing companies in the US and internationally, holding executive leadership positions at cybersecurity and IP Licensing companies. Bob is now CRO at Cybeats, a leading supply chain cybersecurity company that went public last year on the Canadian Securities Exchange (CYBT). Previously, Bob served as SVP at SpyCloud, where he led the company’s business development efforts to engage with key market verticals such as telecommunications, e-commerce, and others. Prior to SpyCloud, Bob co-founded and was CEO of a mobile enterprise cybersecurity startup, Valona Labs, that was acquired in early 2020 by HMD Global (NOKIA Mobile). Bob has also held leadership positions at Motorola, Samsung and Qualcomm. Bob has been the Chair of the Device Security Group (DSG) of the GSMA for the last 5 years, working with mobile device and IoT security issues and standards globally.

Leonid Burakovsky

Vice President, Product Management , Palo Alto Networks

Leonid Burakovsky currently serves as a VP of Product Management at Palo Alto Networks. Leonid pioneered a new area of products to strengthen 4G and 5G security. He is a co-inventor and an author of more than 50 granted 5G/4G security patents and more than 50 pending 5G/4G security patents. Leonid contributed to the Open RAN Policy Coalition ‘Open RAN security in 5G’ WP. He also initiated and led the creation of the new GSMA permanent security reference document, FS.37, which provides recommendations for communication service providers to detect and prevent attacks and security threats against mobile networks, services and applications. Prior to this role, Leonid served as F5 Networks’ Senior Director of Service Provider Solutions and Juniper Networks’ Strategic Alliances CTO. Leonid regularly speaks at industry forums such as Mobile World Congress, IEEE, NGMN, CTIA, Futurecom, BroadbandForum, LTE events, Intel’s Network Builders, to name a few. He has more than 30 years’ industry experience and holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in information systems engineering.

Cathal McDaid

Chief Technology Officer, Enea AdaptiveMobile Security

Cathal Mc Daid is the CTO at Enea AdaptiveMobile Security. He is one of the world’s foremost experts in mobile network security, and is the author of the GSMA’s signalling security guidelines (FS.11). His research work focuses on security of mobile core network and messaging technologies – including the discovery of the Simjacker vulnerability – as well as the area of nation-state exploitation of mobile core networks.
