5G Deterministic Network Applications in Smart Manufacturing

Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd, in collaboration with China Telecom, Huawei, and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, deeply explores the application of intelligent steel production by a 5G deterministic network. Relying on the 3 characteristics of low latency, high reliability, and large uplink bandwidth of 5G deterministic network, many application scenarios with network reliability requirement of 99.999% have been launched, including remote control of overhead cranes, remote control of stacker-reclaimer, 5G slag adding robots, automatic driving of heavy-load AGV, 5G AI scrap steel grading, and steel surface quality inspection.

The “Super Time-Frequency Folding” (Complementary TDD) folds the TDD half duplex spectrum into an FDD full duplex in the air interface, integrating the advantages of TDD’s large bandwidth and FDD’s low latency. With this technology, the air interface reconstruction is achieved, the delay is reduced by more than 60%, and the uplink rate reaches 1Gbps. By combining super time-frequency folding with 5G LAN, Dual Fed and Selective Receiving (DFSR), and TRS-URLLC in a 5G deterministic network, the end-to-end latency and reliability reach [email protected]%.

The innovative application of 5G integrating with the steel industry helps Baosteel reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve safety throughout production and management. Through the 5G deterministic network, it realizes remote control of equipment, helps personnel away from dangerous work areas, improves the working environment, and reduces safety risks. Meanwhile, combining 5G with AI achieves a shift from manual to automatic operations, reduces the number of inspectors by 50%, and achieves a steel defect detection rate of over 90%.
