7LAYERS Extends Radio/EMC Test Capabilities with Most Modern Full Anechoic Room

New full anechoic chamber for state of the art Radio/EMC testing opened by 7Layers in Germany.

Ratingen, Germany: To keep up with the continuously growing market demands, 7Layers, a specialist in validating devices and services based on wireless connectivity, has extended its Radio/EMC test capabilities considerably.

By setting up a new Full Anechoic Room (FAR) we can offer our customers an extended and much more flexible service, using the most modern EMC testing technologies with excellent absorption and shielding capabilities. The new state of the art Full Anechoic Room, which has already been validated, shows excellent shielding and absorption values. This way test projects can run with extremely high accuracy and faster than ever before.

“Wireless connectivity is a pre-condition of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Smart Services it offers”, explains Marco Kullik, Manager Radio & EMC Testing at 7Layers. “To keep up with this trend, more and more devices with integrated wireless connectivity are coming to market. By integrating connectivity these devices become radio-devices, which have to fulfill radio specific rules & regulations before entering the market. The larger the number of such devices entering the market, the bigger the danger that amongst them there are some that

– do not send out radio waves according to their specifications
– interfere with other devices, or
– do not effectively use the allocated spectrum.

This is why electromagnetic compatibility and Radio Spectrum Matters (ERM) is a core capability of radio devices, and this is why regulatory bodies all over the world keep a particularly strict eye on it.”

Covered Frequency Ranges

7Layers 3 m Full Anechoic Room (FAR from Albatross: www.albatross-projects.com) covers a frequency range from 30 MHz to 40 GHz , thus being in accordance with the latest international, EU and US standards for EMC testing and validation. The Radio/EMC chamber is fitted out with both ferrite absorber tiles, which provide especially good absorption capabilities in the lower frequency range and most modern pyramid absorbers with excellent absorption rates in the range between 1 GHz to 40 GHz.

2,4 GHz and 5 GHz
wireless device testing: The new anechoic chamber is suitable for devices working in the 2,4 GHz frequency band, which is used by many WLAN, ZigBee and Bluetooth® devices, and for devices working in the 5 GHz frequency band (e.g. WLAN 5 GHz). The 5 GHz frequency band is increasingly popular for devices with integrated WLAN technology, as it provides additional bandwidth and carries more non-overlapping channels than the 2.4 GHz band. Due to the larger frequency range, bigger channel bandwidth are possible, which allow significant higher data rates. This is e.g. used by the new WLAN IEEE 802.11 ac standard. Devices that have to be tested according to the following specifications benefit especially from this extension of the 7Layers labs:

– EN 300 328 (Bluetooth, WLAN 2,4 GHz)
– EN 301 893 (WLAN 5 GHz)
– EN 301 511 (2G cellular)
– EN 301 908 (3/4G cellular)
– Etc.

Fibre Optic Cable for remote control

In case a device under test only works in combination with a PC or tablet, the computer will be controlled via a fiber optic cable from outside the chamber which results in less interference and more accurate Radio/EMC measurements.

Signaling Units

Signaling units at 7Layers cover 2G, 3G, 4G, WLAN, Bluetooth®, GPS and GLONASS.

Semi anechoic chamber also available at 7Layers

In addition to the new, full anechoic chamber, the 7Layers lab in Ratingen features a semi anechoic chamber for emission measurements according to current and upcoming EMC and Radio/EMC standards.

With the additional installation of the new, state-of-the-art full anechoic chamber, which is suitable for most of today’s wireless devices from sectors such as M2M, automotive, smart home, wearables, medical etc. the 7Layers Group has once more shown its commitment to adapt to the growing requirements regarding Radio/EMC testing, which are playing a crucial role in the upcoming Internet of Things.
