Bali is renowned as one of Indonesia’s primary tourist destinations. The impact of tourism has resulted in various waste management challenges in the city. Issues such as limited landfill space, insufficient waste collections, and limited disposal facilities have become persistent problems. The Indonesian government also faces challenges in waste policy development, including inadequate or unreliable data and irregular activities of waste actors. To provide solutions, the GSMA Mobile Innovation hub, with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, has initiated a waste digitalisation project in Denpasar city. The objective of the project was to support the government and the waste ecosystem players to make more well-informed decisions, streamline and build more effective waste data management processes.
