Digital credit scoring for farmers: Opportunities for agritech companies in Myanmar image

Despite rapid urbanisation in recent years, agriculture dominates Myanmar’s rural economy. Sectoral challenges, like farmers’ limited access to credit and associated low levels of financial inclusion, affect farmer livelihoods and limit opportunities for growth. Recently, innovative agritech companies have been testing the use of digital technologies to mitigate some of these challenges. This report provides a snapshot of the agriculture sector and status of financial inclusion in Myanmar, and examines ways in which recent agritech innovation is promoting financial inclusion in rural communities. It shares early lessons from using digital agriculture data for farmer credit scoring and highlights emerging monetisation models and the roles of agritech companies in the country.
