An enhancement to the 3GPP LTE standard, C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) describes a set of technologies that enable communication between vehicles, infrastructure and people. Industry Standard C-V2X can bring benefits for road safety, efficiency, congestion and pollution reduction while providing value-added services for the end consumer.

Vehicle-to-Vehicle

Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) connectivity supports the exchange of information between vehicles, enabling two-way collision warnings at intersections to improve safety and can even warn about hard emergency braking or stationary vehicles to help prevent collisions.

Vehicle-to-Infrastructure

Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) connectivity enables vehicles to communicate with road infrastructure, such as traffic lights, speed signs and toll stations. V2I can, for example, enable vehicles to monitor the status of traffic lights to inform the driver of when to reduce their speed – not only improving traffic flow and averting accidents, but also reducing fuel consumption and improving air quality.

Vehicle-to-Pedestrian

Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) connectivity protects vulnerable road users by issuing collision warnings to drivers and pedestrians to make streets safer. Safety-critical services are delivered in two ways: by leveraging the cellular network, so an application on the pedestrian’s or cyclist’s smartphone alerts nearby vehicles, or by direct communication between vehicles and vulnerable road users, whereby C-V2X technology is embedded into the smartphone.

Vehicle-to-Network

Vehicle-to-Network (V2N) connectivity enables reliable, long-range communications between vehicles (V2N2V), infrastructure (V2N2I) and vulnerable road users (V2N2P) by using the existing cellular infrastructure. Vehicles can communicate with their surroundings and other smart transport solutions beyond their line of sight to improve road safety.

C-V2X technology enables highly reliable, real-time communication at high speeds and in high-density traffic. Indeed, it has been tested and proven to consistently provide superior levels of security, range, latency and reliability that vastly exceed the capabilities of alternative solution DSRC/802.11p.

The technology also comes with the support of a strong global ecosystem, with over 130 leading mobile operators, vendors, automotive manufacturers, suppliers, and companies from the wider industry backing C-V2X.

Since C-V2X is a globally supported and much more recent and efficient technology compared to DSCR/802.11p, governments must put in place appropriate regulatory frameworks to make our roads safer and smarter. Regulators can accelerate the development and scaling of the market by facilitating trials, encouraging investments, implementing needed roadside infrastructure, providing the necessary frequencies and advocating for a technology-neutral landscape.

From 4G to 5G – Autonomy and Mobility at Scale

Commercially available and with global reach, the established 4G LTE network infrastructure provides C-V2X technology with security and other benefits. C-V2X is now transcending 4G LTE networks (LTE-V2X) to the next generation (5G NR-V2X): future 3GPP releases will bring further enhancements for C-V2X with a sustainable 5G roadmap that upholds backward compatibility. With 5G, C-V2X will help enable full autonomous and connected driving, value-added services and new business opportunities.
