Globally, 1.2 billion people lack access to electricity. The pay-as-you-go (PAYG) solar industry uses an innovative model to provide customers access to electricity in remote areas while allowing them to pay for it incrementally using mobile money. However, this model depends critically on technical integrations between mobile operators and PAYG providers, which can be long and costly.
The Instant Payment Notification (IPN) Hub is a utility created by GSMA to bridge two fast growing industries. It enables multiple mobile operators and PAYG service providers to connect through a single integration, and allows real time notification and tracking of payments.
Our report explores the IPN Hub in detail, lessons learned from a pilot integration of the IPN Hub in Rwanda, and plans for its future expansion across Africa and beyond.
