ClimateTech
Unlocking the power of digital technology to create a low-carbon and climate resilient future
Through GSMA’s ClimateTech Programme, we unlock the power of digital technology in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), to enable their transition towards a low-carbon and climate-resilient future. We do this through the collective support of the mobile industry, as well as public and private actors.
Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges facing humanity and we continue to see its impacts, including frequent extreme weather events, displacement of vulnerable populations, increase in temperatures, wildfires and droughts, reduction of wildlife populations and biodiversity, lower agricultural yields, sea-level rises and daily loss of forest.
Over 10 years of Mobile for Development
Thanks to the support of its donors, GSMA Mobile for Development has used technology to deliver both socio-economic and climate impact for over a decade.
Uniquely placed, we work within the mobile ecosystem and the development sector, advancing the use of mobile technology, connected devices and other digital tools so they can make a positive difference to the planet and millions of lives.
How the ClimateTech team is supporting
The ClimateTech programme is furthering these efforts by encouraging even greater integration between digital technology and climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience strategies in LMICs. Through our research activities, we identify, promote and inform opportunities for digital innovation. Developing pathways for aligning climate action with the sustainable development agenda.
We also catalyse vital partnerships between the GSMA, mobile industry, tech innovators, governments and the development sector, aiming to reduce fragmentation, facilitate scale and promote collective action.
The GSMA Innovation Fund for Climate Resilience and Adaptation
The GSMA Innovation Fund for Climate Resilience and Adaptation was launched with the support of our donors, to help accelerate the testing, adoption and scalability of digital innovations that enable the world’s most vulnerable populations to adapt, anticipate and absorb the negative impacts of climate change, or strengthen biodiversity. We have just opened the call for applications for our latest fund; ‘The GSMA Innovation Fund for Climate Resilience and Adaptation 2.0′. More details on the link below.
The Renewable Energy Dashboard
The ClimateTech programme is excited to share the Renewable Energy Dashboard – a repository for the industry about using renewable energy to power mobile towers.
The GSMA and the mobile industry is committed to playing a central role on climate action. In addition to Mobile for Development’s ClimateTech team, the GSMA engages with members on climate action issues through the Climate Action Taskforce. Find out more here.
