GSMA Innovation Fund Start-ups: Komunidad

Komunidad uses Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions and AI-powered mobile apps to improve disaster response in the Philippines. Komunidad’s typhoon early warning system (EWS) and weather analytics platform help local governments plan and prepare for hazards more efficiently and accurately.

The beautiful island of the Philippines is significantly impacted by extreme weather events, with an average of 20 tropical cyclones affecting the country each year. It is ranked first in the World Risk Index.

Komunidad utilises data and analytics to improve climate resilience by anticipating and better preparing for extreme weather events. The solutions enable businesses and communities to build and deploy their own decision-support tools to strengthen climate action. The GSMA supported Komunidad to use a data-driven approach to integrate environmental intelligence, EWS and mobile phone alerts. The GSMA grant was also used to empower local governments and vulnerable communities in Siargao Island that were devastated by Typhoon Rai, rapidly scaling the solution from municipalities to provinces.

Komunidad is one of the start-ups supported by the GSMA Innovation Fund for Climate Resilience and Adaptation, which was launched in 2022. This initiative is funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and is supported by the GSMA and its members.
