2021 Global Mobile Tower Numbers

total towers

A tower is defined as macro, rooftop or small cell site. Antennae in buildings and in street furniture are excluded.

towers powered by renewable energy

A renewable energy tower is fully powered by on-site renewable energy, or partially powered by it and a fossil fuel power source.

off-grid and bad-grid towers powered by renewable energy

An off-grid tower is not connected to the electricity grid. A bad-grid tower is connected to the grid but suffers grid power outages for more than six hours a day on average.

metric tonnes of CO2e/year from diesel generators

The CO2 estimation is based on typical usage of diesel generators at off-grid and bad-grid sites and excludes emissions from grid electricity generation.

Case studies & projects

The mobile tower numbers presented are based upon available operator and tower company data. Variations in the methodologies used by operators and tower companies to count their towers mean that the numbers should only be considered as estimates. A full description of the methodology used can be found in the Renewable Energy for Mobile Towers Report.

The data displayed has been sourced from GSMA desk research or shared with us by partners and organisations active in-country. If you have information regarding mobile tower numbers, examples of renewable energy case studies or projects, or if you would like to discuss the methodology used, please get in touch by email: [email protected]
