eSIM Discovery
The standardised method for remote eSIM provisioning that the industry specified, which connects any eSIM device to any mobile network operator.
Why has the industry requested this method?
GSMA eSIM Discovery is the universal and fully digital way of activating eSIM subscriptions. This one standardised method is more cost-effective for mobile network operators and device manufacturers, because it means they don’t have to implement their own subscription manager data preparation system.
This service is available via your chosen SM-DP+ service provider partner or the GSMA.
The GSMA currently works with the following SM-DP+ service providers:
1GLOBAL | Eastcom Peace |
Giesecke+Devrient | Idemia |
Invigo | Kigen |
Linksfield | Redtea Mobile |
Teal Communications | Thales |
Valid | Workz |
How it works
When eSIM devices are first switched on, they need to find the subscriber’s chosen operator to activate cellular connectivity. Using the eUICC Identifier (eID) that’s unique to every eSIM, the service matches the eSIM with the owner’s purchased network operator profile. Then, the eSIM device seamlessly acquires the eSIM profile from the correct operator.
Both the consumer and IoT markets are benefitting from this method.
Why is it important for your business?
Due to sustainability and increasing popularity, the industry is moving away from physical SIMs to eSIMs, so it’s just a matter of time before you’ll need to adopt an eSIM remote provisioning method. Here’s why you should choose GSMA eSIM Discovery.
Secure and tested
It’s an integral part of the eSIM ecosystem and subject to the industry approved accreditation and testing schemes, ensuring end-to-end security protection.
Universal remote activation
It’s endorsed by the industry and compatible with all eSIM devices that follow the required standard.
Standardised integration at scale
Activates devices across all major distribution channels, so there’s no individual integration needed between each OEM and MNO.
Maximises eSIM adoption
Makes the customer journey quick and easy, with a one-time setup on their chosen network.
Better than a QR code
None of the printing and distribution costs required with a QR code, as no plastic or paper is needed at point of sale – activation can happen from anywhere.
Practical examples of what it can do

Unlocks opportunities for IoT
It is estimated that B2B IoT could generate $10 billion in telco enterprise annual revenue by 2035 – about 25% of current IoT connectivity-related revenues. (Source: GSMA Intelligence, Oct 2023).
- eSIM Discovery enables IoT trials in new areas without much investment.
- Ensures that all IoT devices are properly connected, as its adoption grows substantially. New IoT specifications mean businesses can deploy eSIM profiles on a smaller scale.
- No need for operators to host a dedicated infrastructure for IoT projects, as they can reuse the consumer eSIM infrastructure, including GSMA eSIM Discovery.
Greater efficiencies for enterprise
eSIM devices are activated remotely, saving time and money on employee onboarding.
- Subsequent updates also require minimal user interaction – keeping costs down in the long-term.
- Makes large-scale device deployment simple.
- eSIM Discovery operates from the cloud – adding resilience, reliability and the ability to scale quickly to meet increases in traffic and uses.
A better customer experience
eSIM Discovery makes eSIM profile activation so much easier for end users.
- Customers no longer need to request their profile.
- No searching menus, scanning QR codes or switching on and off.
- eSIM Discovery is programmed into smartphones, tablets, smart watches and many other devices.
- It’s in over 160 device models from over 40 device manufacturers already.
