HKT launches Tap & Go mobile payment

July 29, 2015 | Luella Charles

Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT) has launched a SIM-based contactless mobile payment service that allows its 1010 and Csl customers to make contactless mobile payments using the Tap & Go app on MasterCard PayPass point-of-sale terminals in Hong Kong and overseas.

Customers can also add a PIN for additional protection to the SIM-secure payment application. In addition to in-store payment, customers can also use the PayBuddy feature for peer-to-peer payments using NFC and can make online payments. The app shows customers their three month transaction history, as well as allows them to earn MasterCard Traveler Rewards and HKT The Club loyalty programme points.

The Tap & Go app is available on the Android Play Store and is offered by HKT for more than 40 different Android phones. Customers can top up their Tap & Go accounts via cash at any HKT, Csl or 1010 store or top up via credit card online or through automatic top up. Accounts can be topped up by up to HK$10,000 per day to allow large purchases of up to HK$1,000 (US$129) each in-store and up to HK$10,000 (US$1289) online.

HKT has been a world leader in NFC for a number of years. It is one of the founding mobile operators of the Asia NFC Alliance, launched in February 2014 to encourage NFC services and PCCW Mobile, its holding company, launched Hong Kong’s first NFC services in 2012 with Hang Seng Bank, Gemalto, MasterCard and Samsung.
