Forensic scientists: Using Augmented Reality to solve a ‘crime’
Etisalat’s application OGLE enables unique learning activity using Augmented Reality (AR). Based on the UK Science curriculum for Years 7 and 8 (learners aged 11–12), it allows teachers to assess students’ understanding of Particle Theory in a way that is highly engaging for the students and measurable for the school. Chosen students are taken out of their normal lessons to become forensic scientists for a day, seconded to a crime scene investigation in the school environment and tasked to solve the fictitious theft of a valuable artwork.

The students are first introduced to AR when they are asked to use their mobile phone or tablet computer to scan the security briefcase holding the case files. The scan reveals a unique code, which allows them to unlock the briefcase and access the confidential information. During the ‘investigation’ they then have to scan for fingerprints, analyze the crime scene and research different scientific theories including Particle Theory in order to compile the evidence required.

Alongside the technology-led activity, students record their findings and submit them as evidence for the ‘courts’ via their mobile or tablet device. If they are successful in their investigation not only will they have completed an interactive refresher on Particle Theory but also convicted their principal of an ingenious heist!

School in the Park’s Silk Road Augmented Reality App
Qualcomm’s Wireless Reach initiative has teamed up with MoGo Mobile Inc. (MoGo) and School in the Park (SITP) to develop unique educational Augmented Reality Experiences (AREs) using 3G-connected mobile devices and MoGo’s FreshAiR™ development platform.

AREs overlay digital educational material onto physical environments and can be accessed anywhere from a mobile device with wireless connectivity, camera, and GPS capabilities.

Custom AREs were designed using Vuforia™, Qualcomm’s AR platform, providing students with interactive media including text, images, audio, video, 3D models, and multiple-choice or open-ended questions during fieldtrips to the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego History Museum and the San Diego Museum of Art.

At the San Diego Museum of Art AREs allow 4th grade students to learn about the first transcontinental highway of the ancient world, the Silk Road, which was a vast network of routes connecting China with western Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Indian subcontinent. Using AREs on a snapdragon-based tablet, students are immersed into a virtual marketplace along the Silk Road where they assume the role of a potter, weaver, sculpture or painter. When students answer the interactive questions correctly they are rewarded with gold coins, which they can use to purchase items at the marketplace.

WE Learn
In Singapore, the WE Learn mobile education project was designed specifically to teach 21st century skills to third-grade students and their teachers at Nan Chiau Primary School, a government designated “Future School” that serves as a model for primary schools throughout Singapore and Asia.

Students in Nan Chiau Primary School’s 21st century classrooms use Nokia Lumia 710 3G-enabled smartphones and a next-generation mobile learning platform tailored to the capabilities of the phone’s operating system and educational applications to develop customized curriculum in English, Science and Chinese.

The third-graders use their smartphones to access assignments; relevant websites that contain podcasts, textual material and video clips; and educational applications via Singtel’s 3G network for practicing self-directed and collaborative learning.

Files created by students on their smartphones are backed-up and synchronized to a cloud-based teaching management system, providing each student an electronic portfolio that parents can review and teachers can access for grading and feedback purposes.
